• chord-based composition
• pattern or ostinato creation
• working with broken chords and rhythm
• establish basic chord progression of I, IV, V, I and variations

Comments:
This activity focuses on chords and their progressions. Students can follow the suggested rhythm patterns of the broken chords to create 4 or 8 bar melodies. Encourage the addition of other chords not listed, following the same patterns (some suggestions below).
• add other chords, for example, in C major, chord II (D minor, D major), chord III (E minor, E major), F minor, B flat major
• teach melody writing and the art of complimenting your accompaniment with a contrasting melody line (use quarter notes against eighth notes, for example)
• introduce descriptive musical language that describes the eighth note accompaniment part, contrasting with a flowing quarter/half note melody
• try a different accompaniment with your melody and discuss its suitability
