This is a wonderful student driven investigative activity that incorporates both individual work, group work, and a presentation to the class.
Students are assigned a section of a given chapter and individually gather and identify key vocab and concepts in their assigned section. Then, they come together with their group members that have done the same for the other sections in a given chapter. Together, they combine their information to create a poster/display on their chapter as a whole.
Following the activity, when it is time for lecture, students present their poster to the class and each group member must answer one question posed by the teacher. After students present that section, the teacher reinforces key concepts or clarifies information with traditional notes/lecture. This back and forth between student and teacher presented information continues until all sections have been discussed.
This activity includes a handout for students to use to gather their data as well as an entire rubric for the overall project and poster, which totals 100 points.
This is an excellent activity that helps students to actually USE their textbook as the wonderful resource that it is without being boring. This activity can be used in any 6-12 classroom setting. Rubric can be adjusted according to your liking.
