WHY THIS PRODUCT?
When looking for breath box resources for my first grade intervention group, I struggled to find ample products that emphasized simple vowel patterns. The simple layout and structure of this product has worked best for my students.
This product was also created as a tool to help students show success in "nonsense word" progress monitoring.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Students are encouraged to take one deep breath and read the words in the shortest column. When this has been mastered, students move on and take one deep breath to read the words in the middle column. The same is repeated for the last column. Students who still struggle to read the shortest column in one breath should be urged to just read as many words as they can.
This product is a breath box resource that focuses on sounds in isolation. This allows you to provide teaching materials with intent. Notice that the first five pages are single vowels (a, e, i, o, u). Then, the vowels are put in combinations of two (a & e, a & i, a & o, etc.). This helps the reader practice specific vowel sounds almost like a vowel intensive drill.
Almost all words are CVC- the only exception are words with "qu" and digraphs "ch", "sh", and "th".
If you choose, this product can produce two complete breath box books: one real word book and one nonsense word book.
