This is a small group reader's theater is for 3 students. It is based on a tale about Brer Rabbit. Brer Rabbit tales are a great way to teach students about a piece of African American history! The most challenging part of any Brer Rabbit story is trying to preserve some of the Southern language and phrases while making it easier to read and perform. Students may need some help with the phrasing. In the script, Brer Rabbit and the other animals are making a garden when he pretends he has hurt his paw so he can take a break. He goes looking for a place to hide and finds a well. It is nice and cool inside so he hops in the bucket. Brer Rabbit is heavier than the other bucket of water so he falls all the way down to the bottom. He is trapped and trying to figure out how to get out when Brer Fox comes. Brer Fox knows Brer Rabbit is lazy and trying to get out of work. He calls down the well and thinks Brer Rabbit is hiding there on purpose and might even be counting his stash of money. Brer Rabbit tricks Brer Fox into climbing in the other bucket. Now Brer Fox is in the well and Brer Rabbit is out. When Brer Rabbit sees a hunter coming, he warns Brer Fox to get ready to run away. Brer Fox is able to escape and, for a while, they are both friends and stop playing pranks on each other. I use reader's theaters to encourage my students to practice fluency. It is a fun way to do something that they need. My scripts are in black and white with only the occasional color picture on front so they are cheaper and easier to photo copy. The problem with many other reader's theaters is that students spend a lot of time waiting for their part. When you have a small group they get more practice and you get less off task behaviors. My name is Melanie Whitesides but my store name is Wonbyone and I hope that your students enjoy this script as much as mine did. If you like this script look for other Brer Rabbit tales. Let me know how things go!
