    Description

STEM Challenges: This package contains six STEM Challenges! featuring Bridges and Platforms! Each is listed in more detail below. I hope the opportunity to purchase this money-saving bundle will help you incorporate STEM into your busy schedule!

    What are the challenges?

This bundle contains six challenges featuring Bridges and Platforms. These are available separately and as part of other bundles. Bridges and Platforms are bundles together because of their similarities! In fact, the Index Card Bridge resembles a platform and can be called a platform bridge. These are highly engaging and challenging! Your students will love these! The individual products include:

STEM Challenge: Bridges with Straws and Toothpicks Students have specific supplies and must construct a bridge that will support weight. They must carefully plan the use of supplies in order to hold the weight and connect across a span. Materials needed: paper clips, straws, toothpicks, index cards, scissors, and weights (like pennies).

STEM Challenge: Bridges with Index Cards

Students will experiment briefly with supplies to get an idea of how the materials work. They are building a platform typeof bridge. It does not have to span an opening gap. Rather this is a task that encourages kids to think of new ways to use materials. I called it a bridge during our discussions with the understanding that a bridge usually spans a gap. However, a platform bridge can do just that! Examples of platform bridges: Walking decks that cover a marsh or bog, backyard decks, and platforms that reach over a stream in your yard. Materials needed: index cards. That’s all!

STEM Challenge: Bridges with Marshmallows Students will use toothpicks and marshmallows to construct a bridge. They will test the strength of their final designs by adding weights to the structures. Materials needed: toothpicks, marshmallows, paper plates or bowls, and weights (like pennies).

STEM Challenge – Build a Platform Using Newspaper Students will be experimenting with geometric shapes used as a building support and then designing and building a platform. There are specific rules to follow in the construction of the platform and the final structure will be tested with weight. One added feature of this challenge is having students use a budget for the supplies. Materials needed: newspaper, masking tape, rulers, and scissors.

STEM Challenge – Build a Platform Using Straws Students will be experimenting with ways to join straws together to use as a building support and then designing and building a platform. There are specific rules to follow in the construction of the platform and the final structure will be tested with weight. One added feature of this challenge is having students use a budget for the supplies. Materials needed: straws and paper clips.

STEM Challenge – Build a Platform Using Craft Sticks Students will be experimenting with ways to join craft sticks together to use in building a platform. There are criteria to follow in making the platform and the finished platform will be tested with weights. An added feature of this task is using a budget plan in which students must pay for the supplies. Materials needed: craft sticks and glue. We used hot glue guns. There are several different ways to complete this challenge. Each is described in the teacher's directions. You will also find constraints posters and lab sheets for each one.

New Features! Each challenge now contains a scoring rubric. Also, each includes all forms in an editable format!

NOTE: Each of these challenges may be purchased individually. You can also see a more detailed preview or read a longer product description by clicking on any of the links listed above.
