The objective of this lab is to observe and record emission lines (the bright line spectra) of different elements in a spectral tube and identify the parent element emitting the light.
- 4 Spectral tubes of different elements
- At least 1 power supply
- Spectroscopes (for each student)
- Colored pencils
This lab can be used in 8th grade physical science and 9th grade earth science. It can be used to examine the visible light portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, or to demonstrate the bright line spectral analysis of stars. I use it as a precursor to the Doppler Effect and then tie it in to explain red-shift. It meets the New York State NYS science standards, as well as the common core standards.
