This is a handout that gives directions for an activity that allows students to learn about each other while broadening their understanding of how archaeologists use artifacts to uncover clues about early human life.
The handout summarizes the role of an archaeologist and defines artifacts. Students are asked to fill a brown paper bag with 3-5 items from home that will give the class clues about their lives. They bring in the filled paper bag the next day, and their classmates (acting as archaeologists) sort through the "artifacts" to draw conclusions about their life.
I model the activity by bringing in my own paper bag full of items from home. This gives the students ideas of what to bring and gets them excited for their turn. This activity is always a hit during our unit that focuses on archaeology. It works great as a beginning of the year activity too.
