Bringing Back Bedtime Stories!
A Reading Incentive Program for Preschoolers, Kindergarteners, and Their Parents
Comes with a School Site License
“Bringing Back Bedtime Stories!” was designed with three purposes in mind:
• To develop a child’s language and early literacy skills in preparation for early
• To secure the cherished bedtime routine developing healthy sleep patterns
while educating parents and guardians on the educational benefits of bedtime
• To develop fine motor skills and story elements appropriate to the age level.
This program was designed to get parents reading bedtime stories to their preschool and kindergarten children. Children snuggle up nightly with their parents to hear a bedtime story (or two!). Each time they hear a story, a parent records the story read in the validation form. When 10 bedtime stories have been read and recorded by the parent, the student responds on the validation form in two ways. One, they record “yes” or “no” as to whether they would like to hear any of the ten stories again. Secondly, the child chooses one book from the ten and draws a response appropriate to the prompt on the back of the form. The drawing encourages four age-appropriate criteria to be evident in their drawing. Once the form is completed it is brought to the classroom teacher, where the child and parents efforts are praised and the child receives a FREE BOOK!
Although this program was designed with the reward being a free book, you may choose another reward. Both the Parent/Guardian Booklet and Validation Forms come in two versions…one mentioning the FREE BOOK and one mentioning a reward. This way you make decisions appropriate for your students because the goal is to bring back bedtime reading in all homes! Let’s prepare students for emergent reading!
