The 17th Century England was a complicated time that saw many changes brought about that literally changed the face of England and surrounding countries. Politically the time was dominated by the Tudor and Stuart Dynasties whose leaders could not contain the many changes being wrought about.

The Catholic church experienced many changes that forever changed how people would practice their faith in the future. Protestantism was defined during this time by King Henry XIII who created his "own" church; the Church of England due to a conflict he had with the pope as well as many dissenters and reformers who impacted the church. the protestant movement rejected nearly all claims of the Catholic church.

Many protestant reformers grew out of this period and King James I commissioned the writing of the King James Bible, the best selling edition of the Bible in its history.

War with Spain, the 30 years war, and the British Civil War occurred during this time driven primarily by religious conflict and by the opposition the belief in the Divine Right of Kings. Parliament and the people gained many concessions during this time that would have lasting impact on the future of England. As Parliament gained in strength, it was able to keep the kings wishes in check.

Scotland was affected by a contentious period drive primarily by religious issues and finally went to war with England as well. Following the English Civil War, Oliver Cromwell and the Protectorate, became a powerful but short lived government.

The Puritans sought to "purify" what they believed to be a totally corrupt church. So strong in their beliefs that they had no qualms in defying the king and government. through sever persecution many gave up and sought a better life in the American colonies, thus beginning a mass exodus from England and Europe to settle in what became the United States of America.

NOTE: The presentation covers many complicated and overlapping issues and should not be viewed as being on a particular timeline per see. It does however, cover the entire unit on 17th century British history.
