The Royal House of Stuart was the ruling royal dynasty of England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland for 111 years, by way of 6 monarchs from 1603 until 1714. The years between 1642 and 1651 were a period of time which saw several bloody battles known as the English Civil Wars. This led to a period of time between 1649 and 1660 as the Dissolution of the Monarchy, an 11 year period during which the monarchy was overthrown and leadership of the country was by a de-facto leader Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell.

Upon the death of the last Tudor monarch Queen Elizabeth I in 1603, who died without an heir, the monarchy was taken over by James VI of Scotland, the son of Mary Queen of Scots. James, was in the eyes of England's Catholics, the legitimate monarch of England. Of the 7 men and women who became Stuart monarchs only one of them, Charles II, was actually born heir to the throne.

She continued to reign as Queen of Great Britain and Ireland until her death. Anne was plagued by ill health throughout her life. From her thirties onwards, she grew increasingly lame and obese. Despite 17 pregnancies by her husband, Prince George of Denmark, she died without any surviving children and was the last monarch of the House of Stuart.
