I use this unit with my grade 10 class, though it would work well with grade 11s and 12s as well.
This PowerPoint has the lecture notes that I use as I work through this unit on British Poetry. As you know, when reading poetry it is important to place it in its historical context, as doing so will help you understand influences on a writer’s ideas and techniques. I have included the (relatively) brief notes I use before annotating a poem for each era: 1. Historical Context: Dramatic Changes 2. Literary Movements 3. Writer’s Technique(s)
This PowerPoint do NOT include annotated poems, but in addition to setting the work in context, it also has tasks with exemplars that you can use for each work.
This will take you and your class from the Medieval Period (with excerpts from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales) to Post Modernism - around 6 weeks of lessons.
