This is a great way to end a unit on the American Revolutionary War as it introduces the differences in British and American words. The students group up and are given a handout with 2 columns. The first column has 25 British words and the second column has their American equivalents. For the kids this is a fun "if we had lost the war this is what we would say" activity, i.e. bonnet instead of car hood, torch instead of flashlight, bobby instead of policeman. The kids always end up making a competition out of it. The group that gets the most right gets 5 extra points on their next assignment, the group that comes in second gets 4, the group that comes in 3rd gets 3 extra points, and everyone else (IF they put forth a good natured effort) gets 1 extra point (but they don't know about all that till the end). The answer key is on the second page.
