Get your entire class in on this one! I use this assessment later in the year for students to use all of what they've learned and collaborate as a class. This can also be repeated as many times as you want!
Students will research and re-write a few stories, and then report one original story (the VOSOT) for a performance of 2 minutes 30 seconds.
They will include the following in their assessment:
- One international story
- Two domestic stories (in the US/ America)
- One local story (If you don’t download video it must be a copy story) (You can use a local newspaper, ABC/NBC/CBS/FOX or other local website to find story)
- One sports or entertainment story (could be kicker)
- One of the five stories has to be a VOSOT (this is a story where the anchor reads over video and there's a soundbite from a source at the end)
This assignment teaches journalism students how to convert print to broadcast writing, how to produce a segment, how to anchor, write scripts, and manage time. Students can do this live in front of the class or recorded. Sample script and grading rubric included.
