"Silly Songs" are my creation, akin to Mad Libs set to music, but set up in a format that is easy for students to follow and learn from, moving from vocabulary brainstorming to listening dictation to story creation. The original music for this product is by Simplesongs.com.
Broccoli Ice Cream is a call and response song about foods and food combinations. The silliness involves random foods being combined, such as fish, yogurt, and fish yogurt; this is all completely random, depending on what words the students choose.
The lesson begins with filling in the words for their Silly Song without knowing the topic of the song. This is an excellent chance to give students a chance to explore and show off what they know; for students who's English level is low, it's a great chance for them to learn new words of their own choosing.
The lesson then moves into a simple listening dictation exercise, wherein they listen to a song and fill in the blanks on the worksheet. This allows them to focus on listening and, when they repeat what they heard, to sharpen their pronunciation skills. This is also where they learn the meaning of the original song, on which the Silly Song is based.
Finally, the students return to their word lists and complete their Silly Song. Since they already understand the story structure, the wackiness of the Silly Song is hilarious instead of confusing.
The students want to read and share so much that, after class, they don't want to leave! Pure success.
"Broccoli Ice Cream" is a Silly Song activity. The focus of learning is the grammar pattern "Do you like [food]?" "Yes, I do," and "No, I don't," and vocabulary related to food.
This product includes a worksheet with a fill-in-the-blank dictation, a table for writing Silly Song vocabulary, a fill-in-the-blank Silly Song; a file with explanations and examples for teaching; and a board layout for beginning the lesson. The dictation and Silly Song are directly related, allowing for easy transition and understanding.
Disclaimer: I was refused permission to include a shortened-version of the audio with this file. Just to be safe, I have also not included the full version or lyrics. The lyrics are pretty simple, so I hope that won’t be a problem.
