"Broken Chain" and "Oranges" by Gary Soto are great stories to compare! "Broken Chain" is a short narrative story and "Oranges" is a poem. Both are regarding dating and middle-school aged boys.
The first task is to summarize. There are a couple of strong comparison questions requiring students to cite examples from the text. This involves students identifying similes and providing meaning for one of them. Additionally, students must figure out words in context and make strong supported inferences.
I have used this or versions of this for a few years. Questions have been updated to meet common core standards. With the average middle school student, this will take several class periods to complete, but the kids love it because the characters are so easy to relate to. My Spanish speaking population also likes the use of some Spanish phrases in which others might not be familiar.
Answer key suggestions and grading criteria are included.
The stories are both the story and poem are easily found on-line and in the 7th grade purple Prentice Hall Literature book, but are not included in this assignment due to copyright.
