I use this booklet to help teach/have kids practice different strategies for finding the length of an object that is shown above a ruler but not aligned with the zero.
I also included a set of larger teaching cards, with items such as a pair of scissors, a glue stick, gym shoe, etc. I usually model each strategy with one or two of the bigger cards and then have the students practice the strategy in their booklets (which only has different size pencils).
1) Cross out the numbers and start at zero (i.e. if a pencil is above a ruler and the tip of it is at 4 and the end of the eraser is at 9, you would cross out the 4 and change it to a 0, 5 would change to 1, 6 would change to 2, 7 would change to 3, 8 would change to 4, 9 would change to 5, the pencil would be 5 inches/centimeters/etc. long).
2) Count/Jump the spaces (you count the spaces between the numbers, I like to show this by circling the space between the numbers)
3) Subtract (find the difference between the number the pencil starts at and the number the pencil ends at).
The product is setup so that for each time you print the document you would get 3 booklets out of it. Each booklet has 6 pages (2 opportunities to practice each strategy).
