For this activity, I read/ sing the book "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" with my students. We sing this using a so-mi-la pattern. The pattern I use is So-Mi So-Mi So-La-So-Mi.
I provide each student with a copy of this worksheet. Students write their own sentence (creating their own lyrics) using the sentence stem provided (scaffolding which helps ELL students). They also draw a picture of what their lyrics are describing.
Students compose their own So-Mi-La pattern and add their lyrics below their three line staff solfege composition.
Next, I have students practice their composition on the xylophone using G for Sol, E for Mi, A for La. Students then practice singing and playing their composition.
Finally, I have students perform their composition for the class. I provide them with two grades, one for their written composition (concept) and one for their performance (skill).
Feel free to adapt to fit your needs. Comment or message me with any questions.
