This worksheet is used in tandem with the "Icarus" PPT (listed separately) or a similar display of Brueghel's painting and Auden's poem. I recommend the additional purchase as the close-reading skills (chunking, etc) is mirrored in the display of the artwork.
Step 1: Visual Analysis - PPT walks students through 1) whole picture and 2) chunks "in context." Space for notes.
Step 2: Brief argumentative statement writing.
Step 3: Full text with chunked stanzas/lines that should be for close reading, including grammar-based questioning (for example, "Who are they in line 2?")
This is a practice in close reading and visual analysis. It serves as a good mid-year assessment of students' abilities to discuss various media and thinking critically about works while forming complex statements about universal truths.
