Ready to be a hero? Ready for your students to go home and tell their parents how exciting science class was today? This is your chance! This INCREDIBLE lab introduces students to the scientific method (ask a question, form a hypothesis, test the hypothesis, analyze results, form conclusions, share the results), the parts of the triple beam balance (measurement tray, riders, rider beams, adjustment knob, zero mark, and pointer), and allows them to practice forming a hypothesis using "If, Then, Because" statements. Students are given a piece of sugary gum (Bubble Yum, etc.) and they find the percentage of sugar in the gum after chewing for five minutes - INSTANT "hero" status among your students! In addition, this lab provides a great introduction to independent, dependent, and controlled variables. All you need is the following:
Materials Needed: Bubble gum with wrapper (like Hubba Bubba), Writing utensil, triple beam balance, calculator and this packet.
We have updated the lesson to include an answer key for the "feedback and observation questions" section.
Included is the designed PDF to be enjoyed as is, or if you need to make changes we also have an editable word doc included.
