This is NOT a list of comprehension questions, vocabulary lists, or crossword puzzles.
These 8 pages represent a way to use the novel Bud, Not Buddy to incorporate CCSS RL.5.1 I can determine themes within a fictional text by thinking about the details. I can explain how characters respond to challenges when discussing themes within a story. RL.5.9 I can compare and contrast similar themes from various stories. SL.5.1 I can come to discussions prepared to share my ideas because I have read or studied the required material.
I have included two Close Reads on The Great Depression and The Jazz Age along with Anticipation Guides that I use to build background knowledge prior to our reading.
It really helps if each students has their own copy of the novel, or at least enough for pairs because students are continually going BACK INTO TEXT to look for and explain themes throughout the novel.
