Here’s a great way to have students read and demonstrate comprehension of Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis. I have students work through this journal as they read in Lit Circles, but it can be used independently as well.
The journal includes graphic organizers for:
• Questioning before, during, and after reading
• Making connections
• Setting and tone
• Cause and effect
• Making Inferences
• Character traits
• Compare and contrast
• Main Idea and Detail
• Making predictions
The journal is aligned with Common Core standards (identified by 6th grade because that’s what I teach, but good for grades 4-7): RL.6.1, RL.6.2, RL.6.3, W.6.1, and W.6.2.
