In correlation with the Common Core Learning Standards and module 2, this summative project is meant to assist students with their writing and reading skills by combining Bud Caldwell’s own rulebook with their own creation. Included in the packet is a modified rule sheet for students to record Bud’s rules while reading the novel, along with an answer key for those rules. After students have completed the novel, they can then complete the Personal Rule Book project which asks the students to create their own rule book based on their own experiences. Students are asked to not only create and number each of their rules but to also explain the meaning of their rule and provide an example of when they used (or could use) their rule in real life. I have used this project multiple times throughout the reading of Bud, Not Buddy and find that students foster a closer connection with the main character after completing their own set of rules.
