This assignment provides two modified primary source readings on the beliefs, teaching and practices of Buddhism. You can chose which handout would work best for your entire class or you can differentiate the content by providing individual students with the handout that best aligns with their reading level. Additionally, there are seven different modern day scenarios or problems seeking advice from the Buddha. Each scenario ties in with a several teachings or practices of Buddhism. Students can respond to one or all scenarios by applying their knowledge of Buddhism. Their responses also allow them to practice letter writing. The assignment requires students to draw upon their higher order thinking skills through application and synthesis. You can also have students choose the letter they want to respond to which is a form of interest differentiation. This can also be used a s a pair-share by allowing students with different scenarios to share with one another their advice letter.
