The class has been studying World Religions in Social Science. This week’s topic has been the Buddhism. The curriculum would have covered the beginning of Buddhism, Buddhist art, Buddhist teachings and an overall review their basic beliefs. One important aspect of the Buddhist religion is chanting. This lesson will introduce the student to the reasons why Buddhists chant, where the chants come from and their meaning by incorporating audio examples of chanting. This will lead to the musical lesson of why a steady beat is important to keep during the chant. After hearing some examples, the students will be given instruments to play along with a recording of a Buddhist chant, keeping a steady beat.
