Students work with a partner to buddy-write couplets. Each partner takes turns writing one of the lines of the couplet. Students are asked to circle the rhyming words in their couplets to help them remember to focus on making the lines rhyme.
This worksheet was used in a second-grade classroom as part of our poetry unit. After couplets were introduced and practiced during whole-class writing time, this activity was used as a writing center for students to practice.
An extension suggestion for using this activity is to make the finished worksheets available for students to read during buddy reading time, so others in the class can read their peers' writing. This really motivated my students to do their best work on their writing! For best results, print the worksheets double-sided and then keep the finished products in a folder for students to grab out during buddy reading. You may want to put the finished products in sheet protectors first!
