Two crossword puzzles and a word search based on the novel by Nigel Hinton.
Both crossword puzzles use the same 34 words - alley, ashamed, beast, beckon, bolt, coincidence, corridor, criminal, daydream, depressed, disbelief, embarrassed, errand, hum, lonely, mug, nag, opportunity, perfect, porch, replace, safe, scramble, scruffy, shuffle, snigger, snob, stain, stench, strangle, suspicious, uneasy, unmistakable, and yawn. Both crosswords feature a word bank to assist students. You could redact this to make the activity more challenging.
One version of the puzzle uses simpler explanations of the words, and is designed for use with weaker students.
The word search asks students to find each of the 34 words - a task which students really enjoy. But it's not just fun - this task encourages them to learn how to spell these words. A second activity asks students to write one sentence for each word. This helps ensure their understanding of the word and its significance in the novel.
I have created these three activities to cater for students in a mixed ability environment. They are active learning activities designed to get students thinking about words and their meanings.
These activities could be used as homework assignments or as class work on occasions when you need a filler, and have nothing prepared.
The solutions to all activities are included.
