Buffalo Soldiers. African American History. Spanish-American War. Spanish American War. 1898.
This is a reading that will help students understand the Buffalo Soldiers. It is used to explain that the military was once segregated, and the contributions of the African-American troops in the past.
A short history of the Buffalo Soldiers is given, and then students answer 10 questions about the reading. This uses multiple depth-of-knowledge levels, and is perfect for reaching common core standards! I like to use this during the Spanish American War simulation, but could also be given for homework, or a bellringer warm up for the day.
This source goes with the Spanish American War Simulation! This lesson is one of the best lessons that I teach all year, and is extremely ENGAGING as students learn about the war from the perspective of a reporter in Cuba for William Randolph Hearst, and then from the perspective of a Rough Rider!
