Haiku is a fun form of poetry for students to read and write. It is short, but that doesn’t mean it is easy! With this activity, students will explore haiku while being exposed to a variety of figurative language. The bundle includes haiku for all four seasons, plus a bonus April Showers set!
Use this activity just like the magnetic fridge poetry, except the strips include full likes of haiku! For each season, there are 32 lines with 5 syllables, and 16 lines with 7 syllables…for thousands of poem combination possibilities!!
They are coded with symbols for each season so they won't get mixed up or can be easily sorted if you decide to mix them.
Students will combine the strips to make haikus about winter and snow, fall leaves, summer sun, spring flowers, and April showers. This is a wonderful activity to use before winter break, spring break, or after "the test" when students are full of energy. It is highly engaging, hands on, and fun!
Many lines include figurative language including: imagery, personification, simile, metaphor, hyperbole, onomatopoeia, and alliteration.
There are several different printing options: 1) magnetic paper 2) stick your own magnets 3) just print on card stock
There are also several extension ideas included for students to write and display their poems as well as analyze them. As a bonus, you will find a figurative language sorting activity. Detailed teacher notes are included with lots of options to make this activity work in your classroom!
This makes a simple poetry center that is fun and engaging but also requires critical and creative thinking!
