PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Students make predictions about real animal brains and test their predictions using an online data base of brains. Through this,
students learn about how specific features of the brain can vary across the animal kingdom. For example, the size of an animal's brain is typically proportionate to the animal's body mass and the different regions of the brain can vary in size based on an animals need for a particular skill (ex: dogs need a larger olfactory bulb because they rely heavily on their sense of smell in their every day life).

Armed with a grasp of how animal brains can differ, students apply their knowledge to build an imaginary animal brain. They start by inventing their own imaginary animal, its habitat, its skills, etc and then build its brain to help it perform its necessary tasks and survive in its created environment. Students' finished product will have a detailed sketch of the animal's brain including why each part of the brain is the size that it is.

This file includes a lesson plan, student worksheet, and a proficiency rubric.
