‘Build CVC Words/Nonsense Words'’ is a fun and interactive game teaching phonological awareness. Print off the game board and letters. Laminate and place the letters on paddle-pop sticks. Students run the letter sticks down the game board and practise reading and/or writing the words/nonsense words they make.
There are two worksheets included with this file. Worksheet one gets the students to group words into ‘real words’ and ‘nonsense words’. Worksheet two gets the students to write three ‘real’ words they have made and write each of them in a sentence. I like to let my students work with a partner and have a go at saying all the words/nonsense words they can first. Worksheets are handy for guided reading activities but don’t NEED to be used with this game.
‘Magic Words’ can be used over and over as new letters and sounds are introduced into your classroom.
Differentiate this activity with the letters you distribute for students use.
The game board is made for beginner readers. The left side uses only the consonants: 's', 't', 'p', 'n' and the right side is slightly trickier using consonants: 'g', 'l', 'f', 'b'.
