This resources is used for students to practice the mental math strategy of "building up through ten" to solve subtraction facts
How the strategy works:
~ Build the smaller number up to the larger number, using ten as a benchmark
~Identify how much is being subtracted (ex: 14-8, 8 is being subtracted from 14).
~ Identify how much more you need to make the smaller number into ten (8 needs 2 more to make 10)
~ Add the remaining amount to equal the minuend (10 needs 4 more to be 14)
~ Add together the two amounts (2 + 4 = 6 so, 14-8 = 6)
*Students should be encouraged to use the double ten frame when learning the strategy. First, with manipulatives to physically build the number up. Then, simply to visualize the strategy.
