During Independent Reading Time or during Reader’s Workshop, do your students just breeze past unfamiliar words. STOP! There are three reading strategies (Word Knowledge) they can use to figure out the meaning of unfamiliar words: Context Clues, Word Structure, Apposition. This graphic organizer gives students the opportunity to infer the meaning of an unfamiliar word using these Word Knowledge Strategies. Then there is room to write the actual dictionary definition (and its’ P.O.S. - parts of speech). Students build their own personal vocabulary bank with this graphic organizer.
