I used this lab to illustrate the concept of speed to my 8th grade physical science students. In this project students will be building a car (body, wheels, axle) from simple materials that are inexpensive and can be purchased from a grocery store or donated. Students will work in pairs or groups to design and test their cars to get the highest speed. Students will race their cars on a ramp to see whose car goes the farthest in the shortest time, thereby obtaining speed (Speed =distance/time.) Students will record a data table of the class speed results. Students can then graph the class data by hand or on the computer. Finish the lab by answering the analysis questions. This lab is a good reinforcement of the speed formula.
