Cubic units become hands-on when students actually have to construct a cubic foot using paper and tape! This activity is an EXTREMELY engaging activity in my classroom. The students have to develop a plan to construct their cubic foot, and then follow that plan to do just that!
It's fun watching the students develop strategies to make sure each edge of their cube measures 1 foot, as well as to find ways to make their cube sturdy.
After constructing their cubic foot, the students have to then think about what they could measure using cubic feet.
Included in this document are two student direction sheets, one which allows students to select a partner and one that allows the teacher to select the partners. There is also a page of Teacher Notes where I offer suggestions and share bits of information, such as needed materials.
Have fun! :-)
