This fun and engaging web activity uses the Build a Prairie website by Bell Live! and the University of Minnesota to guide students through constructing the different parts of tall grass and short grass prairies. Students will use their critical thinking skills to investigate the location, rainfall, and types of plants, animals (mammals, insects, birds and herps) found on short grass and tall grass prairies.
This web activity is a great alternative to direct lecture about the prairies and their inhabitants. It allows students to go at their own pace and to use critical thinking skills to determine what fits into each type of prairie. I have also had great success using this as a sub plan during my biomes and ecology unit. In addition, this web activity provides a great start to a extension project- research more about what they discover!
