Includes TpT Digital Activities Version for Google Classroom Distance Learning!

Make learning fun with Build a Snow Fort Winter STEM Challenge!

In this Winter STEM Project, students receive a letter from the STEM snowman stating that there is a snowball fight contest. In order to win, students must build a fort for protection using only the materials provided. This is an excellent activity for students to work on during the winter months!

This winter activity helps students develop critical thinking and engineering skills. Students plan, design, and execute their own ideas. After they have completed their activity, there is time for reflection on what worked and what didn't.

Aligns with NGSS(Next Generation Science Standards).

What Teachers are Saying About this Winter STEM Resource!

"Used this with my First Graders. They LOVED it! I let them form teams and pick out team names. I let them bring in lego figures to put in the middle to protect them. " - Stephanie C.

"My 3rd-5th grade enrichment group absolutely loved this! They were focused, on-task, and working as teams the entire time. They even came up with creative ways to fix walls that started leaning."

"We have club day at my campus and I decided to do the STEM club. The kids LOVED doing this activity! They had a lot of fun building and creating." - Bianca H.

"My students had a BLAST creating these! Very engaging, and they all worked collaboratively. It was a great experience for them, as well as for myself. Thank you for this resource!" - Soni M.

"This was "snow" much fun!!! My 4th graders LOVED this...especially when they found out that I was the one that got to "attack" their fort with marshmallows. Thank you!!!!" - Angela W.

"We love STEM activities in first grade and this one was a hit! Thanks! " - Joy K.

"Great to use before Winter Break. We did the Snowball Fight (catapults) first, then used them to fire at our forts. Great separate or together. Thanks!" - Katherine T.

Grades K-2

K-2-ETS1-1 Engineering Design

Ask questions, make observations, and gather information about a situation people want to change to define a simple problem that can be solved through the development of a new or improved object or tool.

K-2-ETS1-2 Engineering Design

Develop a simple sketch, drawing, or physical model to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem.

Grades 3-5

3-5-ETS1-2 Engineering Design

Generate and compare multiple solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.

3-5-ETS1-3 Engineering Design

Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.
