I have used this activity several times with great success. I usually use this activity as an introduction to science units on structures and building. The discussion questions are a great way to assess students' prior knowledge. Additionally, this activity is ideal for practising practical money skills
Task: to build the tallest tower you can with only spaghetti and marshmallows
Rules: Each group can only spend $400. One piece of spaghetti costs $5 and each marshmallow is $10. Spend wisely! You will have ____ of time to finish your structure. When the time is finished, you must stop building or you could be disqualified.
Students are working in small groups to complete the task. I focus a lot on team building in this activity and ask for students to self-reflect on how well they worked with others.
