A lot of my students struggle with the concept of stratigraphy. Understanding how rocks layer is an integral part of being able to date rocks and fossils accurately. This lab activity is designed perfectly to address that. Students create a volcano out of four different colors of playdough. The playdough serves as their lava. Using repeated eruptions, students build up layer upon layer of lava until a stratovolcano appears.
It is a hands-on activity your kids will love, and includes questions and extensions that you can easily incorporate into your lesson. In addition, I've included two separate recipes for playdough if you do not have access to any in your classroom.
This is part of a series of lessons on Earth Science.
