I love playing stacking blocks (wooden blocks in a tower) in therapy, but my students often got frustrated with how easy it is to knock over (and some of my students would knock it over or bump the table on purpose). My students love to use the blocks by themselves, so I decided to create mats to build on while practicing language! This is how S & L Builders was born! This version is an open-ended activity (you use any speech/language stimulus while placing the blocks on the mats to create the image). These mats are blank (to be used open-ended)
Materials: stacking blocks game (wooden stacking blocks). Builder Mats. Any speech and language stimulus material (such as articulation cards, language cards, speech/language app). You could also use these in general education and a centers activity or working on academic skills.
Game Set up: 2 ways
→ Put the blocks in a pile and place a Builders mat in front of them.
→ Set up the blocks like the traditional game (3 blocks stacked together, alternating directions) and place a Builders mat in front of them.
Game Play: 2 ways
→ Tell your student they will be building the image on the mat. Have the practice a speech and language target and then place a block from the pile on the mat to create the image.
→ Have the students practice any speech and language target and then carefully remove a block from the tower and put it on their mat to build the image. (Remember they can not take a block from the top row until the tower is down to 2 rows).
I also have Language Builders Available Click Here to View it
This activity looks similar but it has language targets directly on the mats. It covers the following:
• Categories (name items in a category, name the category, & which one doesn’t belong)
• Compare/Contrast (combined and separate)
• Vocabulary (naming item from a description)
• Fix the Sentence (sentence absurdities)
• Following Directions (1, 2, & 3 steps)
• Wh-Questions (who, what, when, where, & mixed)
• Blank Templates (to write your own targets in!)
There are 43 mats total.

This activity uses the same type of blocks but the students remove blocks from the tower (similar to the regular game play) and fill up Language Blocks Mats. This product covers a variety of language targets and has over 80 mats!
