This activity focuses on improving oral language skills. Your students will start by building simple sentences (subject + verb) and then add “blocks” to make more detailed sentences.
Print the blocks on page 3. Give a set to each student. These will be the “blocks” that students use to build their sentences into more detailed sentences. Alternatively, you can use real snap cubes or other colored blocks. Print the reference poster and reminder poem (pages 4-5) and display where students can see it.
Print the cards (pages 7-13) and display one by one. Have your students use the base cubes (red = noun, green = verb) to create a simple sentence. Add blocks to the sentence, until each sentence has more details. The same color blocks might be used again if appropriate (ex. two verbs in the sentence). To begin, use the words provided on pages 14-20. They are color coded to match the blocks. Blank cards are included to add your own. After your students become adept at this, present the pictures without the words and have them create their own sentences. Note: some sentences may not require all the blocks. An example of a “blocked sentence” is provided on page 5.
Writing worksheets are included on pages 21-23 so your students can write down their sentences.
