**Updated to include the original WORD version of the student response booklet in case you need to make changes.
This weekly lesson plan goes along with the common core curriculum map for 2nd grade: Building Bridges with Unlikely Friends. It is the THIRD week in my building bridges Unit.
In this weekly lesson plan, students will learn that bridges are not always structures that can be seen but rather connections and relationships between people and animals. This particular story focuses on an unlikely "bridge" between two animals... a hippo and a tortoise. The story teaches the students about the features of a nonfiction text but also that stories (nonfiction or fiction) can teach us life lessons.
By the end of the week, they are able to:
answer questions related to a nonfiction text.
identify text features used in a nonfiction text.
compare/contrast two subjects (Owen & Mzee) in a nonfiction text.
explain how bridges relate to people, animals and other living things.
The weekly literature you will need is:
Owen & Mzee: The true story of a remarkable friendship by Isabella Hatkoff, Craif Hatkoff, and Paula Kahumbu
***You could teach the lesson with one book. However, it is more effective if the students have a book to work with. You could pair them up with a book or give them their own book. They will need access to a book at the end of the lesson when they compare and contrast.
This book is sold through Scholastic Book Clubs.

1 Owen & Mzee Response Booklet to copy for each student (8 pages long)- the booklet is formatted to be printed front and back so that when you fold it all the pages line up. You don't have to print it as a book. You could copy it and cut the pages so that the students can paste them into their reading journals.
