This weekly lesson plan goes along with the common core curriculum map for 2nd grade: Building Bridges with Unlikely Friends. It is the FOURTH & FIFTH week in my building bridges Unit.
In this weekly lesson plan, students will read the novel Charlotte's Web and participate in a novel study. The students will use context clues to learn unfamiliar vocabulary words, answer literal and inferential questions related to the text and participate in extension activities. The lesson plan provided is written for a 2 week period.
By the end of the week, they are able to:
explain the story elements in Charlotte’s Web.
describe at least one character trait for each of the 4 main characters.
compare and contrast two characters in the story.
write a letter to Mr. Zuckerman expressing their opinion about Wilber’s life.
explain how Fern changes throughout the story.

***You could teach the lesson with one book. However, it is more effective if the students have a book to work with. You could pair them up with a book or give them their own book.

1 Novel Test - 2 pages long (no multiple choice. Students respond in complete sentences. I have included the WORD version in case you want to make changes.
The Common Core Standards addressed are:
RL.2.1 Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.
RL.2.3 Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.
RL.2.6 Acknowledge differences in the points of view of characters, including by speaking in a different voice for each character when reading dialogue aloud.
RL.2.7 Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot.
L2.2: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
L.2.2(b): Use commas in greetings and closings of letters.
L.2.4: Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 2 reading and content, choosing flexibly from an array of strategies.
