This weekly lesson plan goes along with the common core curriculum map for 2nd grade: Building Bridges with Unlikely Friends. It is the FIRST week in my building bridges Unit.
In this weekly lesson plan, students will be learning about the 3 Main types of bridges. They will be using Seymour Simon's book about bridges as a reference. To get them interested in bridges, they will work in groups to build a bridge out of straws and masking tape. Using a bridge booklet that is included, they will take notes throughout the week and reflect on their learning. As a culminating activity, they will research one famous bridge using the internet. Information on the project and links are provided in the plan. Once they research their bridge, they will use the information to write a simple informative paragraph with the name and location of their bridge being the Main idea and the supporting sentences being the information that they located online researching.
By the end of the week, they are able to:
identify and draw the 3 main types of bridges
explain why the 3 main types of bridges are used in building situations.
explain how compression and tension affect a bridge.
research and find information about a famous bridge.
write an informative paper about a famous bridge.
