This PowerPoint describes the two primary types of flats, Broadway and Hollywood, using photo and diagram examples. Students will learn to quickly tell the differences between the two, describe which situations call for which type, identify the parts of each flat, calculate the measurements of lumber cuts in feet and inches, assemble the frame, choose a skin, and apply a skin. I have also embedded two YouTube videos, one by Jonathan Pitzer at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvOLBYA8JEE and one by James McKernan at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5uRdVBprc4.
After learning this information in a full-class lesson and being provided this presentation via Google Classroom for individual reference, my class created the structure included on the second slide of the sample with me functioning only as a facilitator. I was so proud!
This presentation is meant to replace the need for pages 247 to 255 in Theatrical Design and Production, making the information more accessible to high school students.
