Help your students to become masters of mental math calculations; develop confidence and fluency using key mathematical vocabulary.
• This pack will help teachers to help children make their mental math work less intimidating!
• While playing games and working collaboratively, use the key vocabulary (Numbers and Operations) activities to help children develop their understanding and use of math language in solving mental calculations.
• Provide children an immediate focus for a lesson.
• Prepare for tests collaboratively. Children work in partners, or small groups supporting one another in answering questions. Graduate to independent work as children show confidence and understanding.
As a grade 4/5 teacher, I have found one of the biggest struggles is helping my students to understand and remember the meaning of key vocabulary that appear in math questions. It is the vocabulary that causes them the most confusion when answering questions.
As a result, I have designed this package of 61 slides that include the key vocabulary, with definitions, linked to Numbers and Operations for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade. I use a range of the activities in most lessons, to review and rehearse the vocabulary.
This pack also contains 15 slides with 20 questions per slide for daily mental math practice. My students come into class and if one of these slides is on the interactive white board they know to immediately begin - independently or with a partner if they choose, to answer as many of the questions as they are able. We then take up the questions, and I review any difficulties that arise, or make note of children who require further support in a small group situation.
I have found great success with these activities and my students have developed confidence and increased understanding of key terms, which has lead to improved mental math computation.
I wish you the same success!
