I needed a fun, active way to teach contractions, so along comes "Building Contractions." Included in the packet are letter cards, a list of contractions containing not, is/am, have, and will, and red apostrophe cards.
Students play the game by building the two words and holding up the letter cards. Pick a "bossy apostrophe" who then tells what letters he is replacing, takes their cards (and has them sit down), and takes their place! We also kept a list on chart paper so students could see the pattern of what letters were being replaced for struggling learners.
We played this whole group and it was a big hit with my kids, but also helped them learn exactly where that "bossy apostrophe" goes!
For more information on how we used this in class, please see my blog at www.adventuresn2grade.blogspot.com.
