Product Description
Many students arrive in the middle grades as struggling readers. There can be gaps in their literacy skills that prevent them from accessing grade level texts. The read aloud/think aloud strategy models what fluent readers do as they interact with the text. This unit starts with the fundamental skills of visualizing setting and understanding character by modeling the following strategies:
-Teacher read aloud as a model of fluent reading
-Teacher think aloud as a model of the thinking used by a fluent reader in order to comprehend what is read
-Sticky notes as a model for annotating a text
-Share with a reading partner as a way of checking comprehension, verbalizing thinking, and sharing ideas about reading
-Journaling about the reading in order to record what the reader is thinking
The skills that this unit support are:
-Visualizing the setting of a story
-Making inferences about characters based on what they do, say and think
-Supporting ideas about characters using text evidence
This unit is designed to build the metacognitive processes of struggling readers by scaffolding the instruction so that students are able to work with the teacher and a reading partner before practicing the skill independently with their own text.
