Two like activities that build number sense through the creation of combinations of numbers.
#1 Knocking Down Pins: Students are asked to find all the combinations possible to knock down ten bowling pics when they can only knock down one or two pins each time they bowl the ball.
#2 Leaping Logs: Students work to find all the ways they can help Jasper the Jumper (a frog) cross the stream. It takes a total of ten single jumps or he can skip a log here or there.
Extensions for both activities are included. In both activities, the options move from just one or two (jumps or pins) to any number between one and ten.
Possibilities for the activities include:
- partner/group work
- acting out their exploration (chalk drawn logs on the yard? Unifix cube bowling pins?)
- creating a chart of the class's findings for the extension
- discussion around ways students/partners/groups chose to organize their work
