This product is a math menu activity using pattern blocks. Students follow the menu card to build a caterpillar out of pattern blocks at different ages. As the caterpillar ages, the number of pattern blocks needed increases. After the caterpillar stages are built, students look for patterns they can use to predict what the future ages will look like. This product includes an instruction sheet, a color menu card, a black and white menu recording sheet, and a black and white extension activity sheet with T-chart for recording the pattern of the caterpillar's growth. This activity is highly engaging and offers students the opportunity to build number sense actively and hands-on. My students loved this activity and the discussion that followed was amazing. I had my students work with a partner and the patterns they were able to identify and the predictions they made about what Charlie the Caterpillar would look like at age 20, 40, and 60 were phenomenal.
