The beauty of this workspace is that you can “stack” the numbers – or “unstack” – to show both the expanded forms and standard forms – almost magically.
This is a computerized version of S.U.M.
Back in the 1980s, S.U.M. (Success in Understanding Math) introduced an idea of placing the numbers on sentence strips, then sliding them together, revealing only the standard form. The number could then be “expanded” to witness the zeros in action as place holders – revealing expanded form (or expanded notation).
The version you are about to download is Totally Digital !
Take it a step further and have the students cut out the numbers and use it as a manipulative.
Word Form Extension – just open a text box in the work space, type the word form of each individual number card. Place it below its corresponding number card. You’ll have students writing those huge numbers in no time.
Included in the .zip file are a ppt (including directions and workspace) and a Publisher doc workspace.
